Join me today, beloveds, as I speak with the three amazing women behind the cutting edge book “The Amazing Teenage Brain”. Dr. Tara Murphy, Dr. Bettina Hohnen and Jane Gilmour PHD; combined they are wisdom gained from intense study and years of clinical experience to write their insightful book. In this episode they give me a breakdown of the science behind a teenagers development, helping us to understand what’s normal, why it’s helpful and how best to foster a relationship with teens that will give them a solid foundation for the rest of their lives. The women also share about the personal growth process involved in writing a book and how they managed to do it so well together. They are truly an inspiring group of women!

Dr. Tara Murphy is a Consultant Paediatric Neuropsychologist and Clinical Psychologist. She worked at Great Ormond Street Hospital between 2003 and 2017 in neuropsychology and intervention services. Tara has expertise in providing and supervising neuropsychological assessment of children with a range of acquired brain injury and neurodevelopmental conditions. Tara has also been involved in leading research on quality of life, educational interventions, neuropsychological assessment and psychological treatment. Tara believes in the importance of supporting families, teachers and other important people in the system on how to understand a child’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses and mental health. She volunteered in Uganda during 2018 providing training, teaching and being involved in child mental health and neuropsychological services. Tara currently works clinically and is involved in research on Saint Helena, in the South Atlantic.

Dr Bettina Hohnen is passionate about supporting the well-being of young people by strengthening relationships. She is a trained Clinical Psychologist and has worked individually with families for many years. Her combined clinical and academic background means she can translate complex research in the area of mental health and neuroscience to inform parents and teachers. She regularly gives talks and runs workshops with the aim of aligning parents and teachers with the developmental needs of young people. Bettina has recently published a book with two colleagues called “The Incredible Teenage Brain Book (Everything You Need To Know to Unlock a Teen’s Potential)” which is a book for adults supporting teenagers. It takes the cutting edge brain research and considers what it means in a day to day context for parents, teachers and professionals supporting young people. Read this book to understand how to create an environment to protect young people while also offering fertile ground to make the most of the enormous brain potential available at this time in life.

Jane Gilmour is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). She has been working therapeutically with young people, families, school staff and adults supporting young people for over 20 years. Previously she specialised in working with young people who have appetite and growth difficulties and specific learning difficulties. Currently her special interests focuses on the psychological management of neurodevelopmental conditions such as Tourette’s Syndrome, Autism Spectrum, Obsessive Compulsive and Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD). In her academic role at the Great Ormond Street Hospital Institute of Child Health, UCL she teaches and assesses post graduate professionals and students on a wide range of clinical and educational issues. She has published more than 30 peer reviewed articles and lectures nationally and internationally.

“The Incredible Teenage Brain Book (Everything You Need To Know to Unlock a Teen’s Potential)” for parents and teachers, brings together her interests in young people’s well-being, families, education and neuroscience. In this book, brain science is translated into straightforward language to give parents and teachers a road map to guide young people through the day to day challenges and opportunities of adolescence, launching them into an enriched and fulfilled future.
